Yamba SLSC News – April 23rd, 2018

Volunteer patrols on Main Beach will wind up this weekend with the final patrols for the season on duty this Sunday. Yamba Surf Club patrol members have been on duty each weekend and public holiday since the end of September and have clocked up in excess of 4,000 volunteer hours. The club is extremely grateful for the commitment made by these members and their efforts in keeping the public safe in the surf and will say ‘thanks’ at a special get together for patrol members at the Yamba Bowling Club from 3.30pm this Sunday.

Under 14 nipper, Paris Brailsford, has returned from the Junior Development Camp in Sydney where she was runner up in the NSW Junior Lifesaver of the Year Award. Paris is becoming a valuable club member with her great enthusiasm for patrols and we congratulate her on her achievement at this level.

Also returning to Yamba this week was the Reserve boat crew following their participation in the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles in Perth. The crew rowed well in the 3 preliminary rounds to reach the quarter finals of their event but became victims of the tricky surf conditions and finished 5th in their quarter final and were unable to fulfil their aim of a place in the final at the Aussies. Despite their result the crew have had a great season and will be keen to be back again next year to improve on their results.

Other members competing at the Aussies were Pete Rheinberger who finished 8th in the 55/59 years tube race, 10th in the surf race and 12th in the board race and Michael Barker who finished 9th in the over 24 years surf race.

Only 12 starters participated in the weekly handicap surf race held in overcast and wet conditions last Sunday. It was Will Brighton off 210 secs who crossed the line with lightning speed in first place just ahead of Michael Storman off 130. Simon Worboys off 120 secs took out third place. The last swim for the 2017/18 season will be held this Sunday.

Despite the completion of patrols this weekend, other club activities continue right throughout the winter months. The nippers AGM will be held on Sunday May 6th and board training for keen nippers continues each Tuesday afternoon with James Forbes. A date will also be set shortly for the club Presentation Dinner where all the training and education awards for the season will be presented.   The start of the new club season is July 1st with patrols commencing again on September 22nd.

We encourage members of the public to support the golf club raffles in aid of the surf club at the Yamba Golf and Country Club each Saturday from 5.30pm. Participation in these raffles is greatly appreciated by the club.

For all club enquiries, the club office hours are Mon, Wed, Fri from 9.30am – 12.30pm or phone the office – 66462463 or email office@yambaslsc.com.au
