Weekly News Bulletin Extra – 19 January 2015 Country Wrap Up

The collective efforts of 11 Yamba SLSC members resulted in Yamba placing 18th in the 2015 Stramit Country Titles. A total of 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals were won, with 2 of the gold medals won by the U10’s relay teams.

Kalani Ives, Yasmin Elabbasi and Malik Elabbasi joined forces in the U10’s mixed board race to win gold.

The winning trio joined team mate Lilli Young to bring home another gold medal in the U10’s mixed surf team event.

Father and daughter duo Todd and Kalani Ives bought home a total of 7 medals between them. In the individual events, Kalani won gold in the U10’s female board race, silver in the U10’s female beach sprint and silver in the U10’s female beach flag events. Kalani also finished fifth in the U10’s female surf race. Her coach and father Todd Ives won bronze in the 30-39yrs male rescue tube race and bronze in the 30-39 yrs board race. Todd also finished fifth in the 30-39yrs surf race.

The Elabbasi siblings continued to show their strength in water events. Yasmin Elabbasi just missed a medal in the U10’s female surf race, finishing the final in fourth place. Malik Elabbasi won gold in the U10’s male surf race. Older brother Jorden placed fourth in the U13’s surf board riding, sixth in the final of the U13’s male ironman and fourth in the final of the U13’s male surf race.

Jim Dougherty placed fourth in both the 60+yrs male rescue tube race and 60+yrs male surf race.

Gracie Pitkin swam strongly in the U13’s female surf race and paddled well in her board events. She showed great endurance to finish the U13’s iron woman event at the end of the day.

Harry Whitehouse couldn’t stop smiling with his personal bests in the U9’s beach flags and beach sprints. Although not fond of water events he also took part in the U9’s surf race and board race.

Ava Young and Lilli Young had a great time at their first major carnival. Ava was mentioned by team officials for her have-a-go attitude, competing in all events with a big smile on her face, and enjoying every moment. Lilli bought home a gold medal as part of the U10’s surf team. She also made the final of the U10’s female surf race.
