The Yamba SLSC nippers season under chairman Mel O’Mahony and her willing band of helpers started with a fun day and BBQ in less than sunny conditions on Main Beach on Sunday.

There has been an extremely good nippers 09/10 season sign-on and with numbers likely to exceed last year there is a call for age managers, assistants and helpers to ensure that our important junior activities continue smoothly every Sunday morning.

The nippers are the senior members of the future and going on the participation numbers and competition results last season Yamba SLSC has some excellent talent coming through the junior ranks.

Gym manager Phil Kelly, as well as improving the facilities and training at the gym, is helping these junior members with board and other surf life training.

Armidale visitor Cameron Scott (his mum Kate lives in Yamba) started off 80 seconds and took the first round of the Yamba SLSC Carl Schaeffer Memorial han dicap surf swim at Main Beach on Sunday.

There were 14 starters in a good swell with Cassie Dennis (70 seconds) 2nd and Jim Dougherty (50 seconds) 3rd, several competitors cracked a good wave just after the cans and backmarker Brown brothers both swam well on their new handicaps.

Former Yamba nippers now in senior ranks on the Gold Coast Hugh Dougherty and Alyce Bennett will compete in qualifying trials at Tugun on the Gold Coast on December 5 and 6 to secure a start in the 09/10 Kelloggs Nutri-Grain Ironman series.

Round 1 and 2 of the series will be at Kurrawa on the Gold Coast on January 16-17, round 3 and 4 at Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast on January 16-17 and the final at North Cronulla on February 21.

Proficiency tests for intending patrol members will be held on Sunday November 1 and the final test on Sunday December 20 both starting at 8.30am.

As well the club has 15 members in training for their bronze medallion award with the first assessment date set next Saturday October 10 while there are 5 members training for their IRB drivers and crewmans awards.

A new date has yet to be announced for the nippers canoe camp at Nymboida which was to run October 2-4 but was postponed due to low water in the river.

There was a good roll-up of members and their guests to watch the NRL grand final at the monthly social at the club house on Sunday with the next social on November 1 from 3pm.

Tania Williams and the team at Fletchers Fotographics are holding the Swell Pics ’09, surfing photography exhibition at the club houseon October 30 to November 1. For moredetails ph: (02) 66461983, fax: (02) 66461901 or email: yamba@fletchers.com.au
