The 3rd round of the Yamba SLSC Carl Schaeffer memorial handicap surf swim drew 20 starters at Main Beach last Sunday with victory going to Allan Richards off 20 seconds from Peter Muldoon (40) and Caitlin O’Mahony (20) in a small swell.

The club had reserve, masters and women’s open crews at round one of the North Coast Surf Boat Series (NCSBS) at Cudgen last Saturday and the composite open women’s crew came home with the gold medal. With a few rowers unavailable the three composite Yamba crews performed well and with all rowers available are expected to continue to good early season form at the 2nd round of the NCSBS at Red Rock on October 31-November 1. There were no Yamba SLSC members involved in the individual section of last Sunday’s Coolangatta Gold but Joe Dougherty (board) and Joe Faher (ski) competed with a couple of Gold Coast mates in the 4 man relay section.

Main Beach is a sea of black and gold each Sunday from 9am as the 138 registered Yamba SLSC nippers participate sprints, flags, swims, wades, tug-of-war, board, relays and other events under the eye of their team managers and assistants. The 138 nipper registration is up on last year and with most passing their proficiency to compete at carnivals the nipper boss Mel O’Mahony is expecting a big local contingent at the Yamba carnival at Turners Beach on Sunday November 8 from 8.30am. There will be beach sprint, flag, relay, board and swim events for the under 8 to under 14 age groups with plenty of parent help required with working bees prior to the day and at the carnival. Carnival information packages will be available a nippers this Sunday.

The Sunday November 8 Main Beach nippers for the under 5 to under 7 age groups will not be held with all the nipper activity on Turners Beach. Last Sunday there was a high tide but great sea conditions meant plenty of activity for all age groups with the nipper of the week, sponsored with a $5 voucher by the Main Beach kiosk, going to under 8 River Davis. The first local surf carnival of the season will be an under 12 to under 17 age group event at Lennox Head on this Sunday October 25 at 9am. Club board coach and gym manager Phil Kelly has board training on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for any interested members.

Club merchandise such as club swimwear, rash shirts, towels, bags, peak caps, competition caps etc. is available for purchase every Sunday morning during nippers from merchandise officer Janet Pickup on the top floor of the clubhouse. The next monthly club house social for members and guests will be held on Sunday November 1 from 3pm.
